60s ladylike

Military fashion
We’ll forgive you if your first thought is “military, again?”. Yes, military remains a trend for Autumn / Fall 2010 but not as you’ve previously come to know it. Following on from Spring 2010 the women’s military trend, like the men’s (below), turns away from the pomp and ceremony of military inspired clothing we’ve become accustomed to, and takes its cues from 20th Century military uniforms. Lingerie as outerwear
It’s not necessarily about wearing your smalls in the street in the cold of Winter, but wearing underwear as outerwear is never-the-less a trend for Autumn (Fall) / Winter 2010. A mixture of sexuality and femininity, the trend encompasses everything from exposed bras and stay ups right through to delicate laces. Leather clothing
We’re in two minds about including leather clothing in a list of trends. Yes, it is on trend but it’s hard to categorise. You see, it works in with so many other trends and isn’t a style unto itself. You’ll wear it with military and you’ll buy hot pants made out of it. Nor is there anything new in wearing leather itself. But include it we must, you see the leather trend is extending into pretty much every other trend for the season. You name it, it’ll be an option for your wardrobe in the colder months. Buttoned-up collars
Refined sophistication underlies this burgeoning trend; so store those sloppy boyfriend shirts and revealing open collars. Cut out clothing
Normally a clothing style exclusive to Spring / Summer, the cut out / cutaway made a big impact on the Autumn / Fall catwalks. And it did so for more than clothing, but accessories as well. Seen in a variety of styles, with the cut out pieces worked directly on top of skin or ‘filled in’ with sheer fabrics, the cutaway detailing can be worked from the subtle to the sexy. Knee high socks
Given that thigh high boots are on trend (see below) and that they can’t be worn every day (unless you’ve amassed a big collection) there has to be an alternative with similar appeal. Hence for Autumn / Fall 2010 you’ll find yourself rummaging through your sock draw and donning a pair of knee high socks. Or over the knee socks. Or thigh high socks. Women’s camel coat
Despite having been popular on the catwalks, the camel coat didn’t make a strong appearance on the streets until late Winter 2010. We blame that fact on the fierce weather that blighted so many seasons. Capes

Seen on the catwalks of Halston and Preen, amongst others, capes in their various forms will be amongst the most elegant of fashion trends. And yet it doesn’t have to be. Capable of being mixed up and styled in a plethora of ways, this is a style that will suit both high fashion and those days when you just want to throw something on. Right now you’re thinking that this is nothing new. And you’re right; it’s an extension of the sheer trend that’s has, for some time, firmly cemented itself as its own, independent trend. So what follows is, instead, more about how to wear the trend now, and how to set yourself apart from the masses – so that you can bring it forwards and into a new league.
Types of lace
There are many different types of lace, and various methods for producing it – so many that we won’t go into them here. The long and short of it is this: it’s now less about the stretch, allover lace, and more about antique-style lace. Fabrics that look like a more traditional needle or bobbin lace (even if they’re machine made). Generally, go for a wider net, a more unique pattern, a sturdier fabric – rather than a thin stretch lace.
How to wear it
The ultimate balance of lace in 2010 / 2011 is to be romantic but not over-girly; sensual but not over-suggestive. Like taking beautifully crafted lace that would have once been part of a garment and making it the only layer. The lace isn’t an added detail of a garment, it is the garment. And thus we come to lace skirts and lace dresses. Dare to wear them without a slip underneath. Just keep the cut a little more relaxed or the hem a little longer to maintain that aforementioned balance.
Bow Headbands
Bow headbands are one of the most adventurous headbands because bows hold a feminine charm that’s both sassy and childish. Bows are cute but at the same time alluring, as it connotes something that needs to be unwrapped and unraveled. Bows on dresses are pretty enough, so how about bows on your head?
During ordinary days, bow headbands are cute and may be wearable everyday as long as they’re of negligible size. Bow headbands for school was even made famous by a modern fashion icon, Gossip Girl’s Blair Waldorf. They’re best for girls who want to exude the preppy charm.
For additional oomph, you can add crystals on your bow headbands or get them in regal textures like satin or silk. They look best with sexy footwear.
Feather Headbands
For girls who are ready to become instant head turners, feather headbands on their halo territory is one great fashion stunt. Feathers headbands instantly expand the area that your head covers so if you look good, then you will really be difficult to ignore…let alone forget.
Feather headbands are advised for girls who want to simply accentuate a rather bland outfit. If your dress is heavily detailed, we do not advise that you wear feather headbands. But if your dress is just simple and with minimal detail and it needs something loud for it to stand out, feather headbands in complimentary colors will surely do your look justice. Pair with an equally pretty hand bag.
Other Tips for Wearing Exotic Headbands
For bow headbands, bold eye make up is okay, or lip make up. Do not do both, and keep your cheeks neutral or with a little hint of blush only. Since your “head dress” is already loud, don’t tip the balance over and make do with a less fierce face. For feather headbands, you can compliment them with a little daring make up, like stick-on crystals by the eyelids or sparkling mascara. But just keep the blush quiet and the lips just enough to look healthy.
Hair-up is great for those who wear feather headbands because the feathers have the same texture of the hair. Besides, if you let down your hair, your head will just look “bulky”. You get the point. Hair-down, on the other hand, looks great with bow headbands, and here’s the kicker: it doesn’t matter if your hair is wavy, curly or straight. Bow headbands look just like the ones that you use to keep something off (like a bow tie in general) while feather headbands are more “in your face” that’s why hair-up is preferred for the latter.
Since both head bands (bow headbands and feather headbands) are quite daring and risky to pull off, do not wear loud pieces when you’re not sure of it. If you can, ask the opinion of your trusted friends or someone who has a good taste in fashion. If you’re in doubt, don’t do it. Instead, make do with classics that always work—thin headbands with crystals, headbands in layers or headbands which have similar material as jewelry (gold or silver). This also goes for the other accessories that you wear with it. Remember that you will wear it on your head. That’s a place where people will surely see. If you already make a bad impression there, you’ll have a hard time coping for that when the evidence is as glaring as a bright headpiece.
By now, you must already be itching to try on a chic exotic headpiece such as feather headbands that advertise a royal mardi gras or bow headbands which will look charming on your equally angelic face. Just remember to not overdo the fashion statement and that you must be comfortable wearing it. BUY luxury, buy quality, buy something that will become an iconic piece in your wardrobe – from Miuccia’s Prada’s chandelier dresses, to Jil Sander’s raw and ripped chiffon, to Dolce’s knickers or McQueen’s metallic snakeskin marvels, to Lanvin’s most beautiful dresses ever, to Peter Pilotto’s prints, to Burberry’s trench dresses, if you buy one thing for spring/summer, make it a big story. If the recession isn’t letting up yet, buy one thing and the thrill will last.
If hemlines are to be believed as the rule of all things financial, though, things are certainly looking up – skirts are creeping up the thigh and bottom-revealing bloomers, henceforth known as hotpantaloons, first appeared in New York and bred across the fashion cities fast.
While there was a touch of sparkle in the front row of every single show, it’s a trend that is built to last and whether you wear it on your tights, on lamé socks with high heels, around your neck, woven into your chiffon evening gowns or tied to your handbag, a little bit of glitter always does a girl good. Shoes are still big statements but heels are coming down too; kitten heels have even been mentioned and so have clogs (Chanel, Celine, Louis Vuitton).
The big story for summer though, is nudity – the vast majority of shows opened with nude, ice-cream colours, making cut and drapery the big style statements as opposed to eye-popping colours. Where last summer we obsessed about colour blocking, next will be about subtleties of tone: nude with peach with washed out nutmeg, or grey with icy blue. A general lack of clothing will be approved of too – your underwear must look its best next summer because if it’s not on show it’s not worth wearing – only to be covered by swathes of knotted and ruffled sheer chiffon – and a touch of lace will keep things interesting (Stella McCartney, Fendi).
White is always a trend for summer, but 2010 is expecting a full washout – bleached cotton came tailored and masculine or bulging and ruffled. And if you want colour, make it a check (Christopher Kane, Louis Vuitton).
So what to buy, if you will be shopping? Party dresses – lots of them, to be worn day and night: with interesting (and forgiving) folds around the hip for added shape. A jumpsuit – single shouldered or strapless if you dare. Loose trousers that taper to the ankle, preferably in silk. Bring shoes down a level or two, and if you venture from the washed out palette, make it a bold, tribal or ethnic print (Dries Van Noten). A trench coat, long or short (or turned into a party dress at Burberry). A belt – skinny ribbons or wide leather versions; the waist intends to allow you to show off your curves next summer. And if your curves are that good, swimwear is teeny weeny as can be.
And everybody’s new favourite model? Australian model Abbey Lee Kershaw appeared in all the key shows, surely with plenty of ad campaigns to follow. Certainly no recession hangover for her.

We have not yet overcome the stressful times. The homing trend continues with home sweet home providing the protection needed. People are looking for somewhere peaceful, are staying at home more and transferring their activities into their own four walls. Inviting friends round, communal cooking and eating is more popular than ever before which is why the home needs to be cosy. This is evident above all from the demand for emotional products, which convey tradition and a sense of home. What is important here is that it is about high-quality, durable products. This also applies to cooking, eating and indulging, where attention is paid not only to the high quality of the products but most importantly to their functionality and sustainability.
And even guests have to think about what present would give the host the most pleasure. Currently, gifts for use in the home are extremely popular, especially all kinds of gourmet gifts. Trendy, stylish home accessories made of fabric, porcelain or glass are also likely to be well-received.
Inspiring Interior
This season, use is also made of natural materials, like wood, bamboo, wool, felt and glass. Matte surfaces, fine-glaze china – high quality down to the last detail. Floral motifs on fabrics and wallpapers and knitted-look textiles. Marbling, reminiscent of natural stone, engravings and delicate graphic designs. These can be found in furniture design, on walls and floors as well as on glassware and china.
Colour palette – strong and warm
The colours of the season are warm and high energy – from dark brown, camel and saffron to a luminous red – create an ultra dynamic colour palette. Lilac and berry tones in every nuance are still popular trend colours. Various blues and washed-out-look pastel shades provide the contrast to this. The new colours adorn not just furniture and home textiles but also crop up again on cooking pots, kitchen and homewares.
Tradition reinterpreted
Putting a new gloss on the tried and trusted is extremely popular. In line with this, classic trousseaus, for example, are given a totally new meaning, insofar as they are humorously jazzed up. Products are still monogrammed and consequently reminiscent of a traditional trousseau albeit with a broader function. A new kind of tea towel, which can be tied around the body and used as an apron and cooking spoons which fit onto the pot rim thanks to the addition of a groove.

150 years with the trench
The honourable house “made in England” knows his classics are … And what a classic!
Founded in 1856, the house Burberry is due mainly to Thomas Burberry, a couple of unique touches and a great idea to say the least.
Go back in time…. In 1879, Thomas Burberry was looking for a unique material that allows the creation of a garment comfortable and resistant to rain. His studies were the result gabardine.
A fabric composed of threads so thick that they were able to resist moisture. Thomas Burberry created the impetus to find the secret formula of his first coats.
The success of this was real tight. Orders fell from the sky, until the army itself became one. Thomas Burberry recovered design of old coats of British officers that he had designed was thirteen years for the Ministry of War. Added metal rings and shoulder and go: thus was born the trench!
From the trenches to the street.
At the turn of the front, the soldiers held the trench, thus introducing them into civilian life. The years went by and the trench was still retaining its original form. It consists of 26 pieces of varying size raincoat, plus a belt with loops.
Composite double buttoning, the trench is declined in the traditional colours such as khaki, beige or black. The trench keeps bands of fabric inside the seam, which originally planned to be fixed to the legs better and better adapted to the body.
Fall’s wear-everywhere piece comes every-which-way, from basic slimming black to kooky rock ‘n’ roll prints. Jump in ‘em, run in ‘em, live in ‘em. What did we use pants for, again?
