The Summer Fancy Food Show

Posted by Belly | Food and Drinks | Wednesday 30 June 2010 1:09 am

The-Summer-Fancy-Food-ShowHeld in New York this year from June 27th to June 29th, produced by the NASFT since 1955, the Fancy Food Shows are North America’s largest specialty food and beverage marketplace. If you eat, there were many interesting trends and highlights to interest even the most discriminating. The show boasts 180,000 specialty foods and beverages, 2,400 exhibitors from 81 countries, and 24,000 attendees. If 180,000 specialty foods and beverages doesn’t interest you, maybe this will.

The sofi Awards from the National Association for the Specialty Food Trade (NASFT) are the highest honor in the specialty food industry. They recognize the outstanding foods and beverages of the year that demonstrate top quality, taste and overall appeal. “sofi” stands for Specialty Outstanding Food Innovation. If you make a pretty good hot dog, that’s nice, but we don’t think it will be worthy of an award. There’s some pretty tough competition. Let’s take a look at what was worthy.

Since the winners won’t be announced for a few more days, we’ll just highlight the ones that caught our eye – the ones we thought you might be interested in.

In the ‘New Product’ category, we found ‘Apple Ice Wine Vinegar’, ‘Neuske’s Wild Cherrywood Smoked Uncured Bacon’, a ‘Salt and Pepper Chocolate Bar’, and a ‘Masala Chai Concentrate’ from Rishi Tea. Although they probably wouldn’t do well combined in a single meal, they appear to be each a unique addition. Under Gourmet Indian Foods, we also found, ‘Tandoori Chicken Naawich’. It looks good, yum.

Under Product Lines, we found ‘Gluten Free Baking Mixes’ from King Arthur Flour. This is sure to please those that want to avoid gluten. Under the category of ‘Appetizer, Antipasto, Salsa or Dip’, we found another addition from the tastes of India: ‘Spices of India Seasoning’. There’s another we’d like to try with a bit of naan bread. Under the category of ‘Baked Goods, Baking Ingredient or Cereal’, we found ‘Sticky Toffee Pudding’ from ‘The Sticky Toffee Pudding Company’. Who else? It looks really delish.

Under ‘Cheese or Dairy Product’, one item jumped out called; ‘Bellwether Farms Vanilla Sheep Milk Yogurt’ (which appears too rich to eat more than a tub at a time, but nice for spreading on crackers?) In the same category was ‘Hand Ladled Ricotta’ from a company called ‘Antonio Mozzarella Factory’ and something tells us it will be fabulous.

A few more honorable mentions: in the chocolate category, we found something called ‘Barre Infernale – Lait, by François Pralus ‘ – whatever it means it looks more than edible. In the Condiments section, we found yet another contribution from India called ‘Mild Indian Curry Ketchup’ from a company called ‘Dulcet Cuisine’. We’re not sure what you’d put it on, but it tempts one just to dip a finger in and try it by itself.

If you’re on a diet, forget these food shows unless you have incredible discipline. If you aren’t or you don’t care, then indulge. The choices of 180,000 and the atmosphere are sure to stimulate. With all this available, you may save the cost of restaurants on your trip. Bon appétit.

Bursting: A New Trend in Exercise

Posted by Belly | Fashion,Fashion week,Health,Models | Tuesday 29 June 2010 1:09 am

Bursting-A-New-Trend-in-ExerciseDoes it work? So many new trends in diet and exercise and the world keeps getting fatter. TV shows are made of it and so many new experts with so many new theories. How do you keep track? Find the one that works for you, of course. After all, statistics don’t mean anything if they don’t work for you personally. Let’s look at this thing called Bursting. It’s been around for a few years, but is really getting some more attention lately for the results some are getting. First of all, what is it?

The key difference between bursting and other forms of exercise – especially traditional methods including long periods of low intensity, such as walking – is that this is done in ‘bursts’. It teaches your body to become a better fat burner. Burst training is short, but intense periods of an exercise for 30 to 60 seconds. It’s a matter of giving it your all in just a few moments until you feel like you’re going to burst. Your legs are on fire or your lungs are burning. You feel like you can’t go on another second. It’s exhilarating.

Here are some technical facts behind it as shared by J.J. Virgin, a bursting instructor and absolute fitness expert. “When you burst instead of just going at a steady pace, you create lactic acid which in turn triggers the rise of Human Growth Hormone (HGH). This is good stuff! In fact, movie stars pay big money to have HGH injected into them. It helps you hold onto or build more muscle mass, burn off fat weight and keeps your skin supple and younger looking. Your body will also take more time to recover from bursting than traditional aerobic exercise which means a bigger boost to your metabolism post exercise.”

She recommends that you incorporate at least 4 minutes of total burst training every other day. “Burst for 30-60 seconds with an active rest break between sets. Your bursts should be a 9-10 in terms of intensity on a scale of 1 to 10. You truly need to feel like you can’t go another second during your burst. If you can go more than a minute then go harder. The goal isn’t to exceed that one-minute mark, but to incorporate more intensity as you get better. In fact, you will be amazed at how quickly you get better.”

The specifics will be different for everyone, but the main thing is to totally exhaust yourself in just a minute or so. Do the exercise until you feel like you can’t go on another moment.

Here’s a routine she recommends:

Ideally, do a three minute warm-up. Then Burst for 1 minute, recover for 2 minutes and repeat 4 or more times and then Finish with a three-minute cool-down. She points out that the entire session should take just a little bit over half an hour.

Pick your own favorite way to burst. Sprint/walk, Stationary cycle, Stairs, Jump rope, stationary stepping machine – the important thing is bursting and then relaxing, then bursting some more. Why not try it and see if it works for you?

Interested in the World Cup?

Posted by Belly | News,Trends | Tuesday 22 June 2010 1:09 am

Interested-in-the-World CupCalled soccer in the USA and football in the rest of the world, the World Cup match is the annual event you have to see. Let’s look at how things are going so far as we browse tidbits of news that are surfacing.

Craig Brown says that “too many World Cup sides are playing negative football”. He knew the competition was in trouble when Brazil pulled back every man behind the ball against mighty North Korea. On average, there have been less than six shots on target per game – less than three for each team. That’s nowhere near good enough. Too many teams have been negative. They all get as quickly behind the ball as possible when they lose it – even Brazil. I couldn’t believe it when they all got back against North Korea the other night. It was almost as if they were too scared against a team who shouldn’t be able to live with them. There has been an alarming lack of quality. I think I’ve covered five matches and you can go 25 minutes without either team having a meaningful shot at goal. That’s simply not good enough in a World Cup.” Here’s where he gets to the heart of the matter, he says: “It’s almost as if every team is terrified of losing, rather than looking to win a football match through good play. When Scotland played Brazil at the opening game of France 1998 we were cautious but tried to score and did so through a John Collins penalty. There’s no way I’d ever have told the guys to go out and play for a 0-0. It seems that’s the message given by a lot of managers and coaches.” Maybe there is just too much pressure on the teams or things have become too commercialized. So many factors come into play, that when the pressure gets too high, priorities get changed and the true spirit of the game goes out the window.

Some of the teams are positioning themselves to qualify for the final round of 16. Uruguay, for example were victorious over South Africa and this brings them within touching distance of a place in the last 16.  The sour South African coach Carlos Alberto Parreira blasted the Swiss ref but insisted his team could still qualify. “I haven’t seen the penalty properly because there were players in front of me. But the players are annoyed. Everyone said it was the worst referee so far. He was giving yellow cards that were never bookings. He doesn’t deserve to be here. Everything will be decided now in the last game.”

In other news, Switzerland upset Spain, the European champion. The 1-0 win was not pretty. The Swiss spent much of the game frustrating successive waves of Spanish attacks on Wednesday. Gelson Fernandes’ scrappy goal, went past Spanish defender Gerard Pique, was classified as ‘ugly football’. Most say, however, that as ugly as the game was, at least it was interesting.

Siphiwe Tshabalala’s left-footed goal for South Africa or Maicon’s score that opened Brazil’s count against North Korea help to bring some excitement back to what has been, until now, a snoozer. Still, the scoring average is, by far, the lowest it has been since the World Cup expanded to 32 teams in 1998. The angst etched on the faces of England’s players before their 1-1 tie with the United States was an early warning of their constricted and frightened performance. And, not to belabor the point: “The games haven’t been that exciting,” says England striker Wayne Rooney, one of several stars who has yet to live up to expectations. “I’m hoping it gets more exciting.”

In all, players scored just 25 times in the initial games this year and are scoring at a lowly average rate of 1.56 goals per game. At the previous three World Cups, the first 16 games produced totals of 39, 46 and 37 goals, respectively, and the average-per-game never dropped lower than 2.3. Soccer’s governing body, FIFA, isn’t interested in discussing why this is happening. It says conclusions must wait until after the final on July 11. “Not now, it’s just too early,” FIFA spokesman Nicolas Maingot says. We are also holding back judgment until then. As in all sports, surprises can happen at the end making us regret taking our eyes off the game for even a moment. So, we’ll be watching.

The Sedu Hairstyle: What is It?

Posted by Belly | Fashion,Hair | Monday 21 June 2010 1:09 am

The-Sedu-Hairstyle-What-is-ItJennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie, Hillary Duff, Halle Berry and Jennifer Lopez, are doing it. Movie stars, the rich and famous and the whole fashion world is caught up in Sedu. What is it? Can I do it? Is it painful or expensive? What does it look like? Answers to these questions and more are the rewards for reading on.

So many people ask what “Sedu” is. The truth is simple. It is a brand of flat irons and styling tools that aim to provide smooth, sleek hairstyles. So “Sedu hairstyles” are simply looks created by using a Sedu brand styling product. This brand is so special because they use cutting-edge technology. Sedu flat irons reach their max temperature within seconds, omit negative ions for protection, and use special plates that could provide frizz-free results without catching or breaking the hair. It uses patented ceramic tourmaline plates to straighten curly hair without damaging or causing frizz. So, if you want straight and healthy hair that shines and gleans without paying an expensive stylist, go with Sedu.

There are many pluses to using the Sedu iron:  you can have hairstyles like Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lopez right from the comfort of your own home and you can  protect your hair from damage and hairloss. Sedu coined from the word Seductive, and became the manufacturer’s mission to make every woman that used their Sedu Flat Iron a seductively beautiful woman. Sedu hairstyles and Sedu hair cuts are one of the recent trends that has caught on with the general public because they are so easy to imitate.

Many ladies, as well as some of the Hollywood celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry and Jennifer Lopez, have hair that is naturally curly, thick or coarse. They don’t have the naturally smooth, silky and shiny hair that we see on them in their movies and photographs. Their secret is their Sedu hairstyles. Movie stars can afford to spend hundreds of dollars in a hair salon and have a stylist create a Sedu hair style just for them, but what about everyone else? Because of the ingenious design, you can purchase the same exact Sedu hair iron that is used in expensive salons by expensive hair stylists and create a Sedu hair style for yourself that matches the one worn by your favorite celebrity.

Here are some more technical details: The Sedu hair iron comes with a set of instructions that is simple to use. It is uniquely designed and patented and uses plates made of tourmaline crystals which are combined with a negative ionic charge that removes static from the hair. Because of the way the Sedu hair irons are made, the hairstyle is long lasting and no chemicals – not even hair spray are needed. The product works well even on dyed or tinted hair. Any color or type of hair can come out beautifully styled when instructions are followed.

Here’s how to do it: To get the best results from your Sedu hair iron, you must start with clean and dry hair. You should wash your hair with a good quality shampoo in warm water. For those who use a hair straightener often, it is best to use a deep conditioner weekly in addition to the conditioner you will use after rinsing out your shampoo. After your final rinse, a leave-in conditioner is advised to put the finishing touches of moisture in your hair. To dry your hair properly, use your fingers or a towel to gently squeeze out excess moisture. This should be done in a downward motion with your hair kept flat. Apply a heat protectant product in addition to a calming or straightening serum. This will help keep your hair soft and flexible. These products will also make your hair soft and flexible which will make it easier to straighten and will also prevent your hair from becoming damaged by the heat in the Sedu hairstyles iron.

Finally, use either a large round brush or a large flat brush made of boar’s hair only. Natural hair bristles –unlike plastic bristles – will leave the oils and moisture in your hair. Dry your hair with the tip pointed downward being careful not to over-dry.

Voila! The style that made a modest appearance in 2006 and is still gaining momentum all over the world can be yours. Pick yourself up a Sedu hair iron and give yourself that silky smooth and seductive look. Why not bring out the potential in your hair and have more fun in li

Yuri Foreman

Posted by Belly | Health,Lifestyle | Wednesday 16 June 2010 1:09 am

Yuri-ForemanLeyla Leidecker, the wife of WBA Super welterweight champion Yuri Foreman says referee Arthur Mercante should have stopped the fight sooner at the Yankee Stadium in New York last Saturday. He was injured in the seventh round of his championship match with Miguel Cotto Saturday. I’m not sure how much you know about boxing, but it’s basically two guys going into the ring and beating the crap out of each other until one passes out, gives up, or is found to be less effective at beating up the other guy. Boxing is perhaps one of the crudest and most violent sports practiced by human beings to this day. Others may include running with the bulls or employing animals as in cock fights. For those of us that don’t mind watching a human face being used as a punching bag, it is a very exciting sport. When watching it, we often forget the sheer brutality at play in the ring.

Yuri Foreman’s wife, who is a model and also a former boxer, says the referee should have stopped the fight right after her husband was badly injured when he slipped on a wet floor in the seventh round of their championship match. This may be the case, but even though she has some experience in the sport, I’m not sure she has a place in controlling the fight. Usually the manager and coach are left to decide if their boy can take more pummeling.

The fighter from Israel was defending his WBA super welterweight title against Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto when he slipped on the wet floor near his corner and twisted his right knee. Ouch. He could hardly move but managed to finish the 7th. In the 8th, someone from Foreman’s corner threw in a towel. The referee ignored it and allowed the fight to proceed. The ref later claimed the towel was thrown in by an unauthorized person from Foreman’s corner. It seems this is justified because after a short break and asking Foreman if he wanted to continue, they did proceed.

Finally, in the 9th round, the referee stopped the fight when Foreman hit the canvas. Cotto had attacked him with a series of powerful punches that overwhelmed Foreman.

More words from the wifey: “They had to stop it,” she said. “He wasn’t in any condition to continue fighting. Why put him in the situation of getting hurt more? There was no use continuing. He wasn’t going to win. There was no miracle that was going to happen. What was the point? Maybe I should just punch the referee in his face.” Yes, or let your husband’s team make the decisions.

Well, it sounds like she was upset about her husband getting beat up. I think she was happy when he was winning – which he often does, but losing and getting injured are also part of boxing. This may be a wake-up call and soon there may be some ultimatums in their family home. Either he gives up boxing or he gives up wifey. More to come, we’re sure.

Hong Kong Fashion Week 2010

Posted by bell | Fashion,Fashion week | Sunday 13 June 2010 10:14 pm

Hong-Kong-Fashion-Week-2010

This year, the Hong Kong Fashion Week is Monday, July 5th, to Thursday, July 8th. Some of the main categories and highlights follow.

Under the category of Fashion Accessories, they have 1154 items. Some of the items will be: belts and bow ties, bridal accessories, and footwear, eyewear, gloves and handbags. Handkerchiefs and hats, scarves and shawls will also be on display with the latest styles incorporated.

Under the category of bridal and evening wear, we find a single veil. Not a strong category this year, it appears. But there’s much more the show has to offer in other categories.

By the way, according to the 2009 show they said the ‘Chinese mainland pavilion is larger than ever’. Among the companies exhibiting here, the four largest groups come from Ningbo, Wenzhou, Jiaxing and Hangzhou. We can safely assume this has expanded with China treating Hong Kong more and more as its own and China itself having more and more to offer the marketplace. Now back to more products.

By far the biggest category is garments. With 3713 products on offer, it is sure to stimulate and fascinate. Some of the new items to peruse will be: blazers, cardigans, casual wear, items for babies and items for men as well as jackets, knitwear ad maternity wear. So many new items to check out, this category will keep you busy in the 4 short days to shop.

Although children’s wear can also be found in other categories, it is also a category unto itself. Just like for adults, jackets, pajamas, shorts and trousers, coats, dresses, skirts and suits can all be found. Even cardigans and uniforms will be available, so don’t miss this category of items.

Another category which usually stirs some interest is intimate wear, which is called underwear as well. Not flashy names, but perhaps some flashy items. Besides boxers, briefs, panties and slips, there are also 8 items to be found in the sexy underwear category. Don’t miss them.

The final category is yarn, piece goods and textiles. These are miscellaneous items you may need to manufacture clothing. There are 55 items in the yarn subcategory and even some vegetable fibers available. This rounds out our list of categories to cover.

Shoppers the world over plan to come from places like Lebanon, The Netherlands, Russia, Brazil and France. One buyer from Argentina had this to say: “We specialize in clothes for large-size women, everything from sporty to elegant. I’m keen to find new factories that can make garments for our market in Argentina and our internet business in Europe. We can also investigate the market for bigger sizes in Asia. I’ve already met with factories that will be suitable for our younger range, and an Indian supplier of scarves and other accessories, and even jewelry suppliers. The organization of this fair is perfect – staff are very kind and efficient.”

It looks like the Hong Kong Fashion Week is going to top last year and prove to be an interesting place to be. So, if you can be there to check it out, hop on a plane and show up. Hong Kong is an exciting and electric city with many things to offer during your visit. Nightlife, food, history and stunning views are all there and waiting for you. Have a great time!

Do you go Retro?

Posted by Belly | Fashion,Trends | Thursday 10 June 2010 1:09 am

Do-you-go-RetroNowadays, many people are looking for new styles and outrageous fashions. Instead of experimenting with what may happen in the coming months or years, which can be risky and embarrassing, they opt for living in the past. Whether we go back 10 years or 100, there are many fashions that when worn today can look great and cause a stir with friends and admirers. Let’s consider a few that seem to be leading the way from the past.

If you want to try out some fashions you’ve seen from the past, you don’t have to go overboard. You can keep it modern with a retro twist. There are many components you can employ such as platform shoes with cuffed denim pants or capris, and then a modern printed top for spring and some big earrings. There’s also the high ponytail look with red lips from the 50′s mixed with a modern outfit. There are many examples of how you can have a mixed look: retro and modern go quite well together. But one rule of thumb should be followed. When you pick retro styles that jump out at you, be extra careful to compliment them appropriately. A subtle fashion risk is much more easily filled-out with current fashions than something outrageous. Wearing a bright pink halter top might require some extra thought when choosing slacks to go with it.

Another retro style option is denim. From denim jackets to denim western-style shirts to jeans of every distinctive decade’s shape, you’ll always win. Denim lasts a long, long time, so if you pick up a good-quality piece and care for it well, it’s one of the best retro choices you can make. Readily available are: vintage Levis, Ely, and Wrangler for jeans and other denim pieces.

Like always, you should be careful when you’re shopping for vintage-style clothes. Maybe it’s difficult to find a particular item and you might be tempted to get the cheap copy. Make sure that the cool, retro style item you’ve purchased is tasteful and of good quality.

There is also an entire genre of clothing called ‘Pin-Up Girl’. This is in honor of the women that graced the lockers and quarters of the men fighting in wars throughout the years and teenage boys’ lockers and bedroom walls. Everywhere sports locker rooms are found, auto repair garages or may other places men spend time, photos and posters of beautiful women grace the walls and doors. The women in these photos and posters often have quite a unique and flashy style. The lips are red, the hair is sexy and tawdry and the clothing tight in the right places, loose in the right places and missing in most places. Women the world over are copying the hair, make-up and clothing styles of the pin-up girls.

But, not only have the clothing designs come back and had their say again today, hairstyles, shoes, cars and even furniture have had their comebacks. So, when things are getting a bit dull and you need a little fun, look to the past to provide some spice for today.

The Best Sport to help you Get Fit

Posted by Belly | Health | Wednesday 9 June 2010 1:09 am

The-Best-Sport-to-help-you-Get-FitIf you’re already fit enough to participate in sports, you may want to pick sports that will make you even fitter. After all, as the years march forward, it is better that we include exercise and healthy activities in our play time to help keep good habits for many years to come. Instead of choosing to sit and have a coke or beer and watch sports on TV, or pick other bar/pub related past times like darts or checkers or dice, we want to get you up and moving and have fun at the same time.

The best solution we’ve been able to find is to swim. If only for the simple reason that swimmers most often look the best and are the leanest and healthiest. There are many experts and opportunists that say you don’t have to swim to get a swimmer’s body, but, then why do so many swimmers have it? It isn’t called a football player’s body or baseball player’s body. There must be something to the sport. If you go to your local public watering hole and check out the people there, you may not get the right information. Even though some people get in the water every day, it isn’t the same as getting in the water and working out vigorously for an extended period of time as swimmers do. Some people do a lap or two casually then rest. Others just splash and play. Then there’s the biggest risk of the casual swimmer.

Extensive studies have been done on the affects of exercise on the body. Swimming is listed as the number one activity that will create a strong sense of hunger. Too often, people swim casually and eat seriously directly after. This is no way to get in shape. The most important thing one can do is vigorous exercise coupled with eating sensibly. One without the other rarely or never creates real health and vitality.

So, if you want the body of a swimmer, it is best to watch and follow what a swimmer does: some weight lifting, extensive hours in the pool each week of truly vigorous exercise, eating healthy foods.

Why is swimming so good?  Exercising in a pool is the opposite of most other exercises. When you are suspended in water, all the things that gravity does to movement and motion change. No longer is the rest of your body still and balancing while just a few of the muscles work in limited directions. With swimming, your whole body gets involved in the action without the constraints of balance and gravity. It’s the difference between wiggling a chain and wiggling a solid stick. See how the chain flexes and folds with each shake? See how the stick is stiff and only moves all at once in one direction. When the chain flexes and folds, that’s like each muscle in the body moving independently under water. It doesn’t need to be rigid because you are floating. Each joint is free to move and flex and when your try to propel yourself through the water, this is the same as exercise.

So, when it comes to getting fit while exercising, swimming is the best way for most to get and stay in shape. Just watch those after-pool binges.
