Pink and black and Avril all over

sept09 blackstar 250When Avril Lavigne picks up the phone, her voice is so girlie and youthful that I’m taken aback for a second. In the seven years since she burst through with “Complicated,” the pop-punk singer has become part of the old guard—she’s practically establishment. Her lineup of accomplishments includes three albums—a fourth is coming next year—a judging gig on American Idol that airs in January, and a juniors clothing line, Abbey Dawn, sold at Boathouse in Canada. And yet she just, just, turned 25.

Next on the ticket is her first fragrance, Black Star (from $39, at Shoppers Drug Mart). Lavigne wanted the scent to be “a rock ’n’ roll perfume,” and from the packaging on down it reflects her style: The box is decked out in silver studs, the star-shaped bottle is pink—like the streaks in her hair—and topped with a black cap and removable spiked metal ring.

A celebrity with a varied portfolio is no rare thing in the current era, and it would be easy to criticize Black Star as another rubber-stamped brand-building affair. But Lavigne seems genuinely engaged with her creation. Refreshingly, she doesn’t pretend to be a perfumer. There were no stories about a childhood flower garden or a lifelong interest in chypres and fougères. In fact, before P&G Prestige approached her about creating a signature scent, the singer confesses she would just wear “random, different things.”

So why create a fragrance? “It would be something new for me, and I knew it would be fun,” says Lavigne. “It was a really great experience to learn and to expand.”

The Neo-Knitwear Age Is Already Upon Us

knit blogSome trends are easy to identify because they come at you all at once, like ultra-mega-platforms and leather leggings. But other trends mark eras. They’re usually the ones that sneak up on you. Take knits: Word that up-and-coming London designer Mark Fast would be designing a range for Topshop arrived on the same day this week it was announced that H&M would be collaborating with the legendary Sonia Rykiel.

Together, it amounted to a ratification of the emerging interest in knitwear dressing. Rykiel, of course, essentially invented sweater dressing. Fast, on the other hand, is one of several young designers giving knits a major rethink. Rodarte and Ohne Titel are among that same group. Fast’s super-sexy knit dresses are closer in spirit to vintage Hervé Léger bandage dresses than they are to Rykiel’s striped jumpers. (He’d probably die before he made a cardigan.) But as far apart as the two designers may be aesthetically, their work starts with the same length of yarn.

Why the sudden passion for knits? We posed the question to Louise Goldin, whose eponymous line is based on knits she drapes and pleats like fabric. This season, she also debuted her capsule collection for old-school cashmere brand Ballantyne, where she’s now creative director. (Here’s one look pictured at left.) “Why anyone else gets into knits, I can’t say, because I got into it by accident,” Goldin explained. “When I started school, I was encouraged to explore knits because working with them, you can learn about everything. Draping, patternmaking, textile development.” Goldin continued that she’s not trying to replace Ballantyne’s traditionalist approach with anything too avant-garde—at least not for now. “Before I do anything else, I want to play with the brand’s blends, and their knitting techniques,” she noted. “That is the key difference. When you’re working with a knit, you’re the one creating the fabric. You start from scratch.”

Another Creative Shopping Bag

We’ve done lots of posts about how something as simple and inexpensive as a paper or plastic bag can make a big impact as a promotional product. The humble imprinted bag can raise awareness about things as diverse as autism, pain relief, nail biting and fitness. Still, it never hurts to add one more example, so here we have a custom printed plastic bag that promotes blood donation done for the Red Cross.

Another great custom plastic shopping bag, this time by Panadol Extra, a pain reliever sold in the UK. Once again, this example shows how some design creativity can turn something mundane into an engaging brand experience. Previously, we featured some other cool custom plastic bags and a nifty paper bag. (via the adverlab via advertising’s a bitch)

Images of this creative bag have surfaced around the web and it’s definitely a worthy addition to some of my previous bagvertising posts. Thsi particular bag was created to raise awareness about autism and promote a program that helps children with autism, encouraging people to “reach out.”

Swimming with dolphins is something most people dream of doing, but somehow only a few actually pursue this dream. Most people seem to think that it’s impossible to find dolphins in the wild or just don’t have sufficient funds to travel around the globe, hoping to find a pod of wild dolphins and then get close enough to actually swim with those dolphins. Others might feel that they would have to share the intimacy of the dolphin encounter with hundreds of other people in a small wading pool and thus only get to spend a few seconds with these friendly sea mammals without any real contact.

Although this may be true in the massive over crowded Sea World parks and aqua parks in the USA, the Bahamas, Mexico or other busy tourist locations, this “swim with dolphins” dream can easily be turned into reality at Oasis Sea World in the picturesque costal town of Laem Sing in Chanthaburi province, Eastern Thailand.

To swim with dolphins at Oasis Sea World, especialy for groups, it is advised to make a reservation 1 day in advance. This is easiest done by just visiting oasis sea world the day before as they may ask for a deposit payment.
